Harvey Pekar passes away……

I don’t know if anyone is a fan of his or even is aware of his work, but Harvey Pekar was a hero of mine. I loved the fact that what he created was not about rainbows and sunshine shooting out of his butt, but the realities of every day life. I have admired his work and think that the biographical movie “American Splendor” was completely justified in winning at Sundance.

22 Frames That Always Work

Based on “Wally Wood’s 22 Panels That Always Work”, this is freaking amazing and I love this!

Following your favorites…Part 1

One of the most amazing things about being a fan of a webcomic is all the options to use in following said webcomic. With so many options, facebook, twitter, and a plethora of other choices, I decided to start listing them over here as well so we can have an opportunity to show our combined solidarity and support of our local artists and creators.

Please take a moment and add them to your facebook and twitter accounts. I will continue to add the rest of the creators as time allows.

Clockworks party and our 16th webcomic!

Let me begin by saying that we now have our 16th webcomic and I am stoked! Beyond is our newest addition in our amazing journey, and I must say that I am having a blast.

Now on the the review of the Clockworks party. Now sadly I didn’t get to stay for very long as I wanted to, but while I was there I was able to enjoy several tasty beverages, an amazing ramen coleslaw and tasty pork loin!

To Shawn’s mom, now where do I find the baguettes again?!?

Oh yes back to the party… After arriving and waving hi to Shawn, I got to met the lovely lady who brought the creative force known as “The Gaston” into the world, and am now convinced that most likely she will take him out should he ever become a problem. She is quite am amazing person and is so supportive of her son’s creative endeavors, that and she brought the most amazing baguettes that I have had since I was in Wales.

I got to met and get pictures of the nice folks that played the characters of Thornton, Eva, and Toby. They look nothing like the way Shawn draws them, they will need to work on that as he was nice enough to give them really cool outfits, the least they could do is to wear them out in public. The guy playing Toby could only show up in an lousy orange t-shirt..such a let down… ::SIGH::

Next up is Jeff, aka JBeatnik from Shawn’s livestreams. Sometimes is it really cool to met other fans, other times it sucks. Jeff was an absolute blast to meet. Oddly Shawn has even given him a cameo in Clockworks as the amazing destroyer of worlds, Private Stevens… Was that spoiler?!? I hope not…. :)

I also finally got to meet in person Rori(Because of Ivan) and Gibson(Pictures of You), and must say that they are riot in person. But I must warn you dear readers, that Gibson is one of those people, that’s right you know the ones I am referring to, those people we have been warned about for years. Thats right, he’s Canadian….. But I must say he is getting better as he is here in STL and is married to Rori, so there is hope for him yet. (I think Gibson may hit me for this, but the day is still young)

BTW, if you haven’t start reading Because of Ivan or Pictures of you, then either you need to start or I will find you and make you…you don’t want to see me when I am being grumpy..

Now last but not least, Shawn Gaston has spent a year creating a great story and captivating art. I can give the man no higher praise, if you aren’t reading it, start now and keep up, its a wild ride and it is well worth it.

Creator Interview with John Wigger of Zombie Roomie

John Wigger is the Creator of Zombie Roomie.

1)What is the basis of your webcomic and what insired it?

The pitch: Zombie Roomie is a zombie comedy webcomic. John was looking for someone to split the cost of rent but got more than he bargained for when George, a zombie, became his roommate. The explanation: Zombie Roomie is a comic about an odd couple pairing where your average dorky guy lives with your not so average zombie. The two have their “cultural” differences and we see how those effect their daily lives and un-lives throughout the course of the three day a week comic.

2)Who is your favorite artist or arists?

Lar deSouza from Least I could do and Looking for Group (LICD/ LFG). Scott Kurtz from Player versus Player (PvP). Mike Krahulik from Penny Arcade

3)Why do you do what you do?

I’ve always been the “art guy” and involved in comics in some fashion whether it be just collecting floppies or drawing comic characters. Rather than spending all day playing World of Warcraft I wanted to do something productive and I decided upon doing a webcomic. Now I spend the majority of my free time thinking about or working on my comic. It’s quickly become something I have to do.

4)What tools do you use in your process to create your webcomic?

I use Photoshop CS4 and a Wacom Bamboo Fun pen tablet. When I started the comic last October, I was drawing the strips on paper and scanning them into Photoshop then doing the compositing/coloring. Since the end of December, I’ve moved to doing it all digitally.

5)What are your 5 favorite webcomics(other than your own and anything local)?

PvP, Least I could do, Penny Arcade, Chainsawsuit, Evil Inc. From the area, the only strip that is in my bookmarks that gets checked every update would be Edmund Finney’s Quest to find the Meaning of Life by Dan Long. Dan and I have spoken on the phone, via twitter and e-mail a few times and he’s a good guy. I’ve even placed a reference to his comic in one of my strips, http://www.zombieroomie.com/comic/call-me-zombie/. In an early strip of his, Edmund is swallowed by a whale and there is a Starbucks located within… In the comic I did, John and George are swallowed by a whale and amongst the flotsam they find a coffee cup with the name Edmund written on the “don’t burn your hand thingy”.

Clockworks Celebrates One Year Anniversary!

It is with great joy and happiness, (and Shawn’s permission) that I pass along that on
Saturday June 26th, there will be a gathering at The Crack Fox (1114 Olive, STL MO).

This will be in celebration of Shawn’s webcomic “Cloclworks”, having hit the one year mark.

If you are on Facebook, please take a moment and RSVP!

Please take time to come out and support local webcomics!

Thank you!

Fleen, Zombie Roomie, Smurfs & Alan Moore

Welp, we must be doing something right, we have now received a mention from Fleen. I still believe( and I havent found proof  to the contrary) that we are unique in the fact that we are the only blog/site devoted to a local geographic area.  Oddly, I personally expected in the beginning to be limited by maybe 5 or 6 local webcomics and the plan was to be a contact point from which new creators could be in contact with more experienced creators. I never expected to have 16 webcomics locally available after only a couple of months.  It blows my mind….

Speaking of our 16th webcomic, our latest addition  is Zombie Roomie. Drawn and written by John Wigger, this color webcomic is another solid example of color webcomics at its best, being produced by another creative STL’er. That and the guy who is still alive isnt so bad either.

Just when you thought the little blue buggers that irritated kids all through the 80’s were gone, they are back..

And from out of the annals of history, I found this interesting program on Alan Moore. Check out the series called “Monsters, Maniacs and Moore”. Love him or hate him, the man has written some of the most amazing comics. I own very worn copies of Watchman, V for Vendetta, & The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and find myself returning to them on a regular basis.
